She made a dramatic improvement in what I perceived to be an "okay" situation. My organizational skills are better than ever and Barb caused this to happen in a very pleasant, non-threatening way. The typical office interruption takes 10 - 14 minutes. Of that, 4 to 5 minutes are required to refocus on the task at hand. Use these practices to improve your productivity.

  • Turn off the alarm for incoming e-mails. Set aside an appropriate number of times per day for you to check and respond to e-mail and stick to it.
  • Arrange to have "Do Not Disturb" time when necessary. If phone coverage is a problem, consider partnering with a colleague so that one answers all calls while the other works uninterrupted and vice versa.
  • When uninvited colleagues show up at your office to chat, stand up as though you are ready to leave. Ask if you can stop by his/her office later to discuss the matter (on your time table). When all else fails, step closer and closer to him/her. People are not comfortable having their personal space invaded. This will encourage the individual to back away from you.
  • To shorten phone calls say "How nice to hear from you Susan. What can I do for you?" rather than "How are you, Susan?"
